Tucson: Fajitas, Family Time, and a Full-Circle Moment

Tucson: Fajitas, Family Time, and a Full-Circle Moment

Sometimes you don't need a spreadsheet full of excursions. You just need a flight out of Seattle and a few days of desert sun. This trip back to my hometown of Tucson wasn't about exploring the unknown—it was about connecting the people in my present with the places from my past.

My expectations going in were intentionally minimal. The goal was simply to see my family, introduce Karthika to my nephew for the first time, and enjoy a little sunny escape.

Trip Overview

If I had to boil the vibe of this trip down to three words: sunny, wholesome, and bonding. It was deeply unstructured, which—when you travel as much as we do—is a perfectly relaxing way to end a week. Visiting your roots is always a good idea, but this trip felt extra special because I got to experience it alongside Karthika.

Most Memorable Moments

Meeting the Nephew

We only ended up getting one afternoon with my nephew—of course, not every plan works out exactly as drawn up. But we made the most of it with a trip to Oro Valley Park before grabbing dinner. Karthika and he bonded immediately. Seeing them interact and just getting to spend that quality time with him was easily a highlight of the trip (and we got a fantastic photo at the park to prove it).

The Amelia's Breakthrough

Historically, Karthika has not been a fan of Mexican food. But we took her to Amelia's Mexican Food on Oracle, and we actually had a breakthrough. She ordered the fajitas and genuinely enjoyed them. The food was great, the atmosphere was exactly what you want, and yes, we made the classic mistake of eating way too many of their excellent chips before the meal arrived. No regrets.

Gaslight Nostalgia

We took the family to the Gaslight Theatre to see The Belle of Tombstone. I have so many childhood memories of going to this specific theater for their brand of slapstick comedy. Karthika had never experienced anything quite like it, so it was fantastic to blend reliving my own childhood memories with making new ones together.

A Full-Circle Moment at the Ritz

We spent our last night at the Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain. Over ten years ago, I had one of my very first jobs here, working in the restaurant and on the events team. Walking the grounds now—as a guest rather than a worker—was a bizarre but satisfying inflection point. It was a fun slice of my past to share with Karthika, plus a great excuse to just enjoy some downtime at the resort.

Logistics & Practical Information

ACCOMMODATION

We spent the vast majority of the trip staying at my parents' house—you can't beat the price or the company. For our final night, we booked a room at the Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain for a little resort downtime and a trip down memory lane.

TRANSPORTATION

We flew down from Seattle, and once we landed, we relied on the absolute best kind of transit available: free transportation provided by your parents.

NOTABLE FOOD
  • Amelia's Mexican Food (on Oracle): Get the fajitas (Karthika-approved), and prepare to ruin your appetite on the chips.
ACTIVITIES
  • Gaslight Theatre: Highly recommend catching a show here for some classic, goofy slapstick comedy.
  • Oro Valley Park: Great spot to walk around, especially if you have a nephew to entertain.
  • Otherwise, this trip was pure unstructured family hangout time—which naturally meant an endless amount of card playing.

Tips for Travelers

1
Prioritize the People
I don't have any major life-hacking travel tips for Tucson this time around. My only real advice is to remember to actually enjoy the time you have with your family when you get to visit them. Skip the packed itinerary if it means more time just sitting around playing cards.

Reflections & Final Thoughts

I didn't leave Tucson with some grand, life-altering epiphany, and that's perfectly fine. My biggest takeaway was simply how much I loved seeing Karthika and my family bond. It's a quiet kind of milestone, but an important one.

Showing Karthika the places where I grew up and worked was a lot of fun, and honestly, it helped me appreciate exactly where we are today. Neither of us has any desire to pack up and move back to the desert anytime soon, but it's a great place to visit. A casual, low-key trip—exactly what we needed.
