Tucson: Fajitas, Family Time, and a Full-Circle Moment

Sometimes you don't need a spreadsheet full of excursions. You just need a flight out of Seattle and a few days of desert sun. This trip back to my hometown of Tucson wasn't about exploring the unknown—it was about connecting the people in my present with the places from my past.
My expectations going in were intentionally minimal. The goal was simply to see my family, introduce Karthika to my nephew for the first time, and enjoy a little sunny escape.
Trip Overview
If I had to boil the vibe of this trip down to three words: sunny, wholesome, and bonding. It was deeply unstructured, which—when you travel as much as we do—is a perfectly relaxing way to end a week. Visiting your roots is always a good idea, but this trip felt extra special because I got to experience it alongside Karthika.

Logistics & Practical Information
We spent the vast majority of the trip staying at my parents' house—you can't beat the price or the company. For our final night, we booked a room at the Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain for a little resort downtime and a trip down memory lane.
We flew down from Seattle, and once we landed, we relied on the absolute best kind of transit available: free transportation provided by your parents.
- Amelia's Mexican Food (on Oracle): Get the fajitas (Karthika-approved), and prepare to ruin your appetite on the chips.
- Gaslight Theatre: Highly recommend catching a show here for some classic, goofy slapstick comedy.
- Oro Valley Park: Great spot to walk around, especially if you have a nephew to entertain.
- Otherwise, this trip was pure unstructured family hangout time—which naturally meant an endless amount of card playing.
Tips for Travelers
Reflections & Final Thoughts
I didn't leave Tucson with some grand, life-altering epiphany, and that's perfectly fine. My biggest takeaway was simply how much I loved seeing Karthika and my family bond. It's a quiet kind of milestone, but an important one.
Showing Karthika the places where I grew up and worked was a lot of fun, and honestly, it helped me appreciate exactly where we are today. Neither of us has any desire to pack up and move back to the desert anytime soon, but it's a great place to visit. A casual, low-key trip—exactly what we needed.

Two weeks in Thailand - island-hopping through Koh Chang, Koh Mak, and Koh Kood, a birthday spent scuba diving, and a cooking class I had to quietly escape. The trip I needed, with the people I love most.

Snowstorms, Saunas, and Tactical Retreats
What was supposed to be a standard work trip to Dublin quickly turned into a high-stakes lesson in European transit pivots and the life-saving power of a hotel sauna.
